The younger brother of the deity Amaterasu, the god of fierce storms and tempests, Susanoo was cast down from the heavens to the earth due to the sins of his violent behavior by the Yaoyorozu no Kami (numerous gods). On earth, Susanoo encountered the extraordinarily beautiful Inada-hime. When Inada-hime was about to be swallowed by a massive monster, an eight-headed serpent Yamata-no-Orochi, Susanoo saves her after swearing an oath to marry her. The two of them built the first shrine in Japan in the land of Suga, and Susanoo transformed from a fierce god into a beloved hero deity. The divine sword that emerged from the tail of the Yamata-no-Orochi that Susanoo defeated is the Kokonoe no Tsurugi, one of the other Three Sacred Treasures of Japan

In the middle of the 2nd century, Yamato Takeru received orders from his father, Emperor Keiko, and subjugated Kumaso (modern day northern Kyushu).
Yamato Takeru was given a divine sword, Kusanagi no Tsurugi, from his aunt Yamato Hime for further conquests into the east (the eastern expedition).
Yamato Takeru went east, attacking his enemies with fire, swinging the Kusanagi no Tsurugi. Using flint, his armies lit up war torches and crossed the rough seas. Yamato Takeru eventually pacified all of the lands starting with the land of Ezo (northern Honshu).
Afterwards, in a chance of fate, Yamato Takeru met Miyazu-hime, the younger sister of his lieutenant general, Takeinadane. Miyazu-hime was said to be as beautiful as the moon shining in the darkness.
Yamato Takeru was smitten with Miyazu-hime’s beauty and swore to her that he would come for her after being victorious in battle
On the way home from the eastern expedition, Yamato Takeru is saddened as he hears of the sudden passing of his lieutenant general Takeinadane. Miyazu-hime and Yamato Takeru become a couple and dwell in peace and serenity for a time. However, their blissful moment did not last long as Yamato Takeru received orders to subjugate Kojin, one of the gods (a bethemoth) of Mount Ibuki.
Yamato Takeru entrusts Miyazu-hime with the divine sword, Kusanagi no Tsurugi, telling her “(should it so be) let this sword take my place”, and then courageously departs to face Kojin.
But as fate would have it, Yamato Takeru tragically met his end.
After Yamato Takeru loses the battle between him and Kojin of Mount Ibuki, he leaves a poem reminiscing about his country in his last moments. It is said that in it he thinks of Miyazu-hime and the Kusanagi no Tsurugi.
Yamato Takeru is revered all over Japan as the oldest and most powerful national hero deity. Miyazu-hime had the Atsuta Shrine built, enshrining the Kusanagi no Tsurugi, Japan's guardian, as one of the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan.
